Coccidiosis ImpactNo Comments
Coccidiosis has a major economic impact on both beef and dairy producers in the US and worldwide. The cost of the disease on a worldwide basis is estimated at $400 million (US) and this does not include losses on reduced gain and feed efficiency, which are the effects of sub clinical coccidiosis.
It has been estimated that 95% of the losses are from sub clinical coccidiosis infections that producers fail to identify.
The information contained in this website is intended to assist producers in identification of the disease and programs to prevent or control coccidiosis. Many feed companies provide feeds containing coccidiosis control products but fail to educate the producer on how to use the products in a control or prevention program.
We will provide information on the various products cleared by FDA to control, prevent and treat coccidiosis along with the pros and cons of the alternative products. We believe that a preventive program for coccidiosis should be in place until calves are at least 1 year of age. Some of the products offer additional advantages beyond coccidiosis control or prevention that have great value to the producer. These advantages include increased rate of gain, improved feed efficiency and bloat reduction.
It is imperative that coccidiosis control/prevention programs are in place as changes in calf management are made so the calf can deal with the ingestion of oocysts that will occur. The calf’s immunity system is weak during these stressful periods and coccidiosis can cause severe damage if a program is not in place.
Our interest is to provide producers information on all products that are available and point out the programs that we believe will provide the most “bang for the buck”.
Both consultants have many years of experience with these products and understand the strengths and shortcomings of each product and will share those with you.
Feed companies and pharmaceutical reps will actively defend their programs but the information will allow you to make an independent judgment as to the best program for your operation.
